Alder (alnus glutinosa)  is found throughout Europe, Turkey, North Africa and Southeast Asia.  Though it is a light colored, fairly straight grained  wood  it becomes exquisite when spalted.   Spalting is caused by a fungus that is nourished by the sugar in the tree sap. After the fungus dies either by digestion of all the sugar or by being killed by frost, it turns black or dark brown, causing interesting irregular lines in the wood...an art created by nature.
