Koa (acacia koa)  Koa is the best known of the endemic Hawaiian woods and is recognized worldwide for it's remarkable variety of grain figure ranging from plain to curly to deep "fiddleback". It is this figuring that sets Koa in a class of it's own.  A moderately heavy wood, it's color can range from  golden orange to deep reddish brown. Chatoyancy is the property that describes the more dramatic pieces of curly,  tigerstripe or fiddleback koa.  Chatoyancy gives a sense of depth to the wood creating a three dimensional quality.
